An Era of Discrimination Ends

With the repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" the US Government has publicly recognized that the policy was discriminatory toward the GLBT community.  This recognition may open a floodgate of other discriminatory federal policies including ENDA (Employement Non Discrimination Act) and gay marriage.

The law that for almost 18 years has banned openly gay Americans from serving in the armed forces will be officially repealed Tuesday Sept 20,2011, nine months after Congress voted to end the Clinton-era edict. Obama, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, signed off on the change in July, and set Tuesday as the end of the law that has long been known as "don't ask, don't tell," or DADT.

Repeal means that for the first time in America's military history, service members will be allowed to publicly reveal their sexual orientation without fear of reprisal.

This may be the reasoning behind the vehement opposition from John "Grandpa" McCain, possibly the most virulent anti-gay member of congress for all time.
